Monet's mission is to re-open closed doors of academic and economic opportunity. To impact individual lives, families, and communities with positive, life changing programs---that yield positive, long lasting results, and significantly reduces recidivism.
Monet's Adult Learning Center (MALC) is a 501-c3 Community Based Literacy Organization (CBLO). Founded in February 2005 by Shiron L. Brown, MALC provides GED Preparation, Adult Basic Education, and Career Pathway Programs to adults 18 years and older residing in the "under served, economically disadvantaged" communities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia. These programs prepare students to take the Official GED Examination, the Career Readiness Certification Tests, and help them acquire basic knowledge and skills needed to obtain meaningful employment.
Since its inception, Monet's GED Preparation Program has provided assessments and classroom instruction to more than 1,475 adult residents. Students have attended classes at Monet's Activity Center, Hampton University's College of Continuing Education Facility, Lincoln Park Outreach Center, Old Hampton Community Center, West Hampton Community Center, C. Waldo Scott Center for H.O.P.E., Dickerson Court Lighthouse, Doris Miller Community Center, Greater Hampton Roads Boys and Girls Club, Newport Harbour Neighborhood Network Center, Ridley Recreation Center, Stuart Gardens Community Center, Huntington Learning Center, the College of Bryant and Stratton / Hampton Campus, the Y. H. Thomas Complex, and the Lighthouse Outreach Ministry.
Monet's GED Preparation, Adult Basic Education, and Career Pathway Programs have successfully graduated 200 students, and helped many others realize that they too can obtain their GED Certificate, increase their educational functioning level, and better prepare themselves for the workforce.
Monet's Adult Learning Center is the second largest adult GED service provider in the Cities of Hampton and Newport News, and considers it a privilege to serve the residents of each city.
